We are so excited to be hosting our first Book Club this weekend, Saturday July 25, 2009 at 7:00p.m. The One Ingredient Book Club (named the one ingredient because each member is typically responsible for one ingredient of a shared meal), will be discussing the book PUSH by Poet Sapphire.
This group of ladies has met over the last year to discuss books by various women authors including Sista Souljah, Ayn Carrillo-Gailey, and Kimberla Lawson Roby. Books are decided by group consensus and need only meet one condition – “there is text on each page!”
This group is about the coming together of women to talk about women “stuff” over good books that provide a shared pre-text. Its also about the power of reading, words, dialogue, getting back to the basics and ‘turning the TV off!’
About PUSH:
Amazon.com Review
Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. That is the device deployed in the first novel by poet and singer Sapphire. “Sometimes I wish I was not alive,” Precious says. “But I don’t know how to die. Ain’ no plug to pull out. ‘N no matter how bad I feel my heart don’t stop beating and my eyes open in the morning.” An intense story of adversity and the mechanisms to cope with it.
(note: The book has been made into a movie (see above pic) featuring Comedian/Actress Monique)
